‘After only a short time available to the public on the TED YouTube channel the organization removed the video, claiming the presentation “contained serious factual errors that undermine TED’s commitment to good science” and accusing Hancock of “pseudoscience”. After failing to qualify these accusations with any supporting evidence and facing an intense backlash from the public, TED was forced to backtrack and retract their initial statement. The video was uploaded in an obscure location on their blog, with TED maintaining that Hancock’s views were well outside “orthodox scientific thinking”.

For many, the expression “orthodox scientific thinking” lay at the heart of the decision to remove Graham Hancock’s talk from their channel – the attacks on his credibility and the petty, unprofessional accusations, unsupported by any kind of rigorous analysis of specific details which he could refute, were little more than masks to hide what was fundamentally an ideological issue. ’

Well it looks like as with many other things, TED is only okay with ‘ideas worth spreading’ if those ideas step in line with the status quo. :/

Today’s protest was rad, to say the least. The police presence was insane; wasteful and aimed at intimidating. You can’t see them here, but the number of communists was surprisingly high.

There are pictures of me (carrying this) with the Greens and Friends of the Earth (against fracking). Not so fond of those~, so you’ll have to go Facebook-sleuthing if you care to see them.

Finished The Video Course!

I started going through Structure of Man Figure Drawing Course by Riven Phoenix [link] in the middle of February this year, and now I’m finally pretty much finished it! :D

Overall, I would definitely recommend it, to anyone who can’t find that they just don’t have enough skills to really start drawing the human figure properly. I especially recommend it to those who just don’t work well with books, have crappy hearing faculties for a class with a teacher or generally can’t find/access a good school or classes for this kind of thing.

Since doing it, I am a lot more capable to try and draw my own illustrations whereas before with my 2 years of experience in life and observational drawing, I wasn’t really getting anywhere. This won’t get you there 100%, but it will take you a hell of a long way.

This course wasn’t without problems. For instance towards the end, I had to start skipping certain videos that weren’t working out because the teaching was a little flawed.

For the educational value, price and convenience, it’s amazing. It’s more than 100x cheaper than the tuition fees i’ve paid for the last two years of university, and has done a hell of a lot more for the money.

Bullet Points!

Awesome things:

Great if you’re a visual learner, a kinaesthetic learner or if you suck with books, (I’m all 3). You follow the guy through EVERYTHING!
I find you often get more of the right kind of explanatory sketches than the popular artist anatomy books, and you get to draw them all yourself.
54 hours of 720p video content, none of it is filler.
YOU CAN REWIND. There are so many times when my learning had been derailed because I haven’t heard a teacher properly in a RL class, so this is like a godsend.
Breaks down all the skeleton and muscles in a very accessible way
He doesn’t tell you the jargon unless it’s a good idea to.
You learn nearly everything you need to learn to know how to draw surface anatomy of a figure. (IMO, there are a few tiny missing things, but nothing that a few dA tutorials can’t patch up)

Lame things:

Sometimes the camera just get enough definition on the pages he draws on well enough, and his light (and sometimes crucial) underdrawings aren’t always visible.
While many of the things he says are engaging at first, the latter parts often have an air of repetition to them. It made going through them more difficult.
Could do with more supporting knowledge when it comes to his segment structuring the human body in the middle of the course. It caused various complications with the muscles later on.
Sometimes his drawing practices didn’t translate well into this tutorial form. In some videos, usually at the end of a section, he would go into drawing the area that the section was about, but he doesn’t tell you what kind of thing or what angle you’re drawing, so he imagines it, and you kind of have to guess what he’s doing or just try to copy him rather than think about it yourself. I decided to skip them after a while. It’s only in a few videos though, so they’re okay.

Worth noting:

He doesn’t tell you how big all the videos in the course are. BE PREPARED! It comes just under 30GB.
The videos are in WMV format, so I had to convert the whole bunch so I could watch them on my iPad. If you’re sticking with a computer and have VLC, you’ll do just fine.
You don’t learn figure variation. It’s just dedicated to drawing a reasonably muscular dude, but like with other things, it’s nothing a good few dA tutorials and practice can’t fix.

I would seriously recommend this for anyone who is struggling to draw good figures. It’s much better than life drawing classes, because you get to understand what’s going on inside the body, rather than thinking of the body as a bunch of abstract forms. This kind of internal knowledge is essential if you want to get into illustration with a good degree of realism. You also learn everything slowly, building up from simple bits of knowledge to more complex ideas.
